3 Dr. Seuss Quotes to Apply to Parenting

by Michelle Dempsey M.S., CPRW

Even in my adulthood, I still can’t help but feel giddy when my daughter pulls a Dr. Seuss book off of the shelf at bedtime. Maybe it’s the nostalgia of my own childhood, the way in which I used to memorize each story with ease, or the fact that hopefully, in some way, my daughter is following in my love-for-all-things-Seuss footsteps.

Recently, on the helm of Dr. Seuss’ big birthday month, I have found myself clicking on any internet post related to the great works of Seuss, and have fallen more deeply for the famous quotes that we tend to recognize him by.

This got me thinking – how much better (and more entertaining) parenting would be if we could just live by these three Dr. Seuss quotes in the process?

Because, after all, “adults are just outdated children!”

“Kid, You’ll Move Mountains!”

Part of our role in parenthood is to inspire.

No matter your child’s age, their personality, or how they happen to be feeling in any particular moment – there is no better way to build self-confidence and the willingness to try than to remind your child of their ability to inflict great change in this world.

“I meant what I said and I said what I meant”

I’m sorry, I had to, I couldn’t help myself.

But really, if your child asks WHY they cannot go play in the backyard at 9pm in the middle of a snowstorm, just remind them that Dr. Seuss said it first – and, also child, please don’t ask why.

“A person's a person, no matter how small.”

…or big, or different from you.

If you’re anything like me, you are deeply committed to raising a kind and tolerant child. As your child goes through the process of starting a new school or entering into new social settings – one of the greatest Dr. Seuss quotes is a lesson in itself – everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from – is a person who deserves respect, kindness, and the same treatment you’d expect.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!!
